Are you looking for the best Acupuncture for anxiety in NYC?

What Is Anxiety? Everyone has moments of anxiety throughout their life – it's a normal reaction to feelings of stress. Some anxiety can actually be beneficial in some situations, as it activates a fight or flight instinct and helps you prepare and pay sharper attention to what's around you. The difference between anxiety-inducing moments and an anxiety disorder is that feelings of anxiousness are persistent and recurring for those affected. Feelings of anxiety are disproportionate to the situation and make the ability to function normally difficult and, in some cases, impossible.

Why choose Acupuncture? Acupuncture theory states that there are pathways or acupuncture meridians through which energy, known as Qi, flows within our bodies. Internally, each acupuncture meridian is connected with an internal organ. Each organ houses a spirit associated with it. For example, the Heart stores Shen and the Liver stores Po, Lungs store Hu and Kidneys have Zhi. When the internal organs get out of balance, these spirits become disordered, resulting in mind disturbances. Acupuncture treatment aims to diagnose and treat the imbalance in the internal organs through needling specific points on the meridians to help Qi and Blood flow freely to the affected organs. Qi and Blood nourish the affected spirit and help it to restore its balanced state. Practically speaking, this process of balancing Qi and Blood is very effective at calming the mind.

How Acupuncture for Anxiety Works? During acupuncture for anxiety treatment sessions, small needles are placed along with specific areas of the body. Known as acupuncture points, these areas are thought to be where blockage of energy may be occurring. The needles come in a variety of thicknesses and lengths and are used to stimulate and open up blocked channels of energy. Until the late 1990s, acupuncture needles were not recognized as tools to treat medical conditions. In 1997, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of acupuncture needles as medical devices. During that same year, acupuncture was recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the treatment of pain management and other medical conditions. The FDA currently regulates the standards for acupuncture needle use and safety.

What are the benefits? There have been several studies done about the effects of acupuncture on anxiety. These studies have focused mostly on generalized anxiety disorder and suggest that acupuncture is helpful in treating general anxiety. One promising study from 2015, for example, found that acupuncture improved symptoms in people with anxiety that didn’t respond to other treatments, including psychotherapy and medication. Participants received ten 30-minute sessions of acupuncture over the course of 12 weeks. They experienced a significant reduction in their anxiety, even 10 weeks after treatment. However, two reviews of existing research, one from 2007 and another from 2013, note that many studies on the subject aren’t very reliable. Some had very few participants — including the one mentioned above — while others were poorly designed. On the other hand, these reviews also point out that acupuncture doesn’t seem to have a negative effect on anxiety. In a more recent 2016 study on rats, acupuncture was found to be effective for reducing anxiety. The researchers suggested that it impacts how the body triggers the fight-or-flight response. While we need to better understand how acupuncture affects anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias, research is showing promise for acupuncture as a viable and safe option. If you have anxiety that hasn’t responded to other treatment methods, or you’re simply interested in trying something new, acupuncture shouldn’t worsen your symptoms.
